Kennard Backman Visits For a Game In Atlanta

Whitfield Academy TE/WR Kennard Backman

Whitefield Academy two-way player Kennard Backman recently attended Georgia Tech's opening game against South Carolina State. Tech is one of six schools that are showing Backman attention.

Kennard Backman and his Whitefield teammates suffered a 33-7 loss to Wilkinson County this past Friday in spite of Kennard's strong showing. "I had seven catches for seventy yards and scored our only touchdown," said Backman. "On defense, I had five or six tackles and a forced fumble. While he's happy that he had a good game, Backman would have preferred a win for Whitefield.

Kennard is currently getting attention from six division one schools. "I would say that Vanderbilt, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, and Kentucky are the ones I'm hearing from the most and also get mail from Louisville."

Backman is not ready to name a favorite out of that group. "I don't have an offer yet and all the coaches are saying they are evaluating me and wanting to get more film to see how I play." Until he begins getting offers, Backman will not be naming any favorites.

Now that the college season has begun, Backman is beginning to take and set up future visits. "Last week I went to the game at Georgia Tech and really enjoyed it there." Backman was impressed by the campus and the facilities. "They have a good coaching staff." This past weekend he made the trip to Nashville to see Vanderbilt play. "As a tight end I can really see myself playing in their offense." Backman will be traveling to Athens to see Georgia play this coming weekend and he also hopes to make it to Clemson for one of their games.

While most of the teams are looking at Backman as a tight end, Georgia Tech may be looking at him for another position on the offensive side of the ball. "They have said they are looking at me as a receiver type player; maybe a slot receiver or as a wideout."

Louisville is the one school that is not looking at him on the offensive side of the ball. "Louisville says they want me as an outside linebacker but personally, I would prefer to play tight end more so than any other position."

It would seem that the schools recruiting Backman as a tight end may have the edge right now. "That would be a fair assessment about how I would feel about the teams recruiting me."

Backman is hoping to have a decision by December. "I feel once the offers start coming in I'll look at those schools and have a decision by the start of December." Backman is anxiously awaiting his first offer. While he waits for that offer he continues to shine on both sides of the ball for Whitefield Academy.
