The stars seem to have aligned for Julian Royal of Milton (GA) high school. On October 14 he ended his long recruiting process by picking Georgia Tech over the other semi-finalist for his services, Georgia with nearly thirty schools left at the altar. Julian talked with us about the events surrounding his announcement.

In a few days, the 6-8 senior and his Milton teammates will not only begin defense of their Georgia State 5-A title, but compete for the mythical national high school crown.

Leading up to his announcement day, Julian Royal was quiet as a church mouse and left everyone in the dark about which school he would choose. The CIA would have been envious. “I woke up that day and I thought throughout the day and made my decision before lunchtime.”

The battle for Julian’s verbal was close up to the end as there were things he liked about both Tech and Georgia. In the end, one thing led to his choosing Tech. “It came down to how well I connected with the Tech players and coaches and that was it.”

There have been stories that not even Julian’s family knew about his decision ahead of time. Julian’s dad helped guide the process and Julian confirmed that he didn’t know ahead of time what his decision would be.

The same can be said about Coach Paul Hewitt knowing what Julian’s decision would be. Coach Hewitt had received some texts and calls leading him to believe that Tech might be the choice but he did not get any indication from Julian until after the announcement had been made. “I called Coach Hewitt after basketball practice an hour or so later.”

The early signing period that allows the basketball recruits to fax in their letters of intent begins on November 10th. Julian has plans for the day and location where he’ll sign his letter of intent. “I think I’ll do it in the Milton gym on November 10th.”

Julian and his teammates are anxiously awaiting the start of practice and the first game of the season. “We’re mainly involved with our conditioning right now which involves running and lifting.” With the high expectations for this year’s team, Coach David Boyd has been preaching to them that they need to stay humble and work hard. Julian hopes to use that advise now and moving forward with his career at Georgia Tech.
