After hearing from and seriously thinking about offers from two or three schools, Golden has now decided to choose a school that got involved late in the process. "I made my commitment to Georgia Tech." Golden had been talking to Coach Charles Kelly and decided to call him to give Georgia Tech his verbal.
Golden's commit has not been announced until Kelly could look at his transcripts. "He told me to hold off announcing until he could see if I need to take a class this summer." Golden may need to take a foreign language class this summer to clear the NCAA Clearinghouse. "I will find out on the 4th when we come back from Christmas break."
Golden's commitment to Georgia Tech will become official on the 14th when he travels to Atlanta for his official visit. "Coach (Paul) Johnson will be giving me an offer and I will make it official then."
Jamal had been interesting in Tech and all he need to hear from Coach Kelly was that they were interested in him. "When Coach Kelly expressed interest in me I knew that was where I wanted to go." Golden was close to committing to Kentucky or Illinois but that changed when Georgia Tech entered the picture. "It is a lot closer to home and you can't beat the education you get from Georgia Tech." The decision is good for both Jamal and his family. "My parents are happy with my choice and it is easy for them to come over to see me play."
Golden has been playing quarterback throughout his high school career but he'll be moving to the defensive side of the ball at Tech. "Coach Kelly says they want me either as a safety or cornerback but I am coming in as an athlete." Golden will also be given a chance to return both punts and kickoffs.
Golden hasn't played defensive back since his freshman year. "I've played quarterback every year since then but I feel I am a good enough athlete to come in and get playing time." Golden is looking forward to the challenge that Georgia Tech is offering him.
Three schools were in the picture before Golden got the call from Georgia Tech. "I had offers from Kentucky, Illinois, and Troy and I was looking to commit to either Kentucky or Illinois when Coach Kelly and Georgia Tech came into the picture."
