GoJackets.com continues its series to help you get a view of the big picture in football recruiting. Next, we will take a look at the defensive back prospects.

Current Depth Chart

CB: Jemea Thomas, Louis Young, Domonique Noble
CB: Roderick Sweeting, Jamal Golden, Chris Milton
SS: Isaiah Johnson, Corey Dennis, D.J. White
FS: Fred Holton, Demontavious Smith, Lynn Griffin

Current Seniority Chart

1 senior – Sweeting
3 juniors – Thomas (R), Young, Johnson
3 sophs – Holton (R), Dennis, Golden
5 frosh – Milton (R), Smith (R), Noble (R), White, Griffin R = Redshirt

Notes – The secondary has been a constant position of strength for Georgia Tech recently. One thing to note is that while players appear at certain positions on the secondary depth chart, they are also capable of moving to other positions in the secondary. Incoming freshman D.J. White is a case in point. Although White is listed at safety (for depth reasons), he could also wind up playing cornerback. Additionally, Jemea Thomas and Rod Sweeting can both play corner and safety. Only a limited number of offers have been handed out but don’t let that fool you. All these offers were handed out in the beginning of the process and the staff wants to impress on those offered that they are not giving out offers to just anyone as some schools have been known to do. We continue to evaluate and have a strong group of defensive backs included in that evaluation group. There is a possibility that we could take as many as three defensive backs depending on how the numbers work out. Two may be a more likely number.

Expected 2013 Class Open Slots – 2

Current Commits – 0

Open Slots – 2

Prospects: Leon McQuay, Jalen Ramsey, Cameron Sutton, Brandon Facyson, Darius Curry, Vernon Hargreaves III, Anthony Covington, Korrin Wiggins

Likelihood of committing is rated in 1 of 5 categories: 1. We Lead 2. We Like Our Chances 3. Could Go Either Way 4. Leaning Elsewhere 5. Unlikely But Possible

BRANDON FACYSON – (6’2”-178) The Northgate, Georgia athlete is a 3 star and is ranked as the #73 safety by scout.com. Facyson plays defensive back as well as receiver but prefers playing in the secondary. Brandon began receiving attention from GT last summer at their camp and he also attended both the North Carolina and Georgia games. Facyson has offers from GT, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech. VT seems to be the main competition for GT in getting his verbal. Brandon wanted to make a decision at his spring game but his parents may have convinced him to take more time in making his decision.

Best Guess: We Like Our Chances

DARIUS CURRY – (6’1”-190) The Flowery Branch, Georgia cornerback is a 3 star and is ranked as the #76 cornerback by scout.com. Darius now has over 15 offers. Curry attended the GT Junior Day and has shown strong interest in GT since then. Oklahoma State is another school that is getting Darius’ attention. His brother signed with Oklahoma State and at one time they were his leader. Curry has formed a strong relationship with GT Coach Charles Kelly and GT now looks to be his leader. There is the temptation to join his brother but he’ll likely stay close to home.

Best Guess: We Like Our Chances

CAMERON SUTTON (6’0”-175) The Jonesboro cornerback is a 3 star and is ranked as the #70 corner by scout.com. Sutton is one of the most athletic of the defensive backs that have been offered. He also excels in basketball and baseball in addition to football. Cam has double digit offers. Sutton has camped at GT and has visited other times since then. He has developed good relationships with both Coach Buzz Preston and Charles Kelly. Sutton is not rushing into his decision. He has GT as one of the schools that he is favoring. It won’t be a surprise if he decides to stay close to home.

Best Guess: We Like Our Chances

JALEN RAMSEY (5’11”-180) The Brentwood, Tennessee corner is a 4 star and is ranked as the #18 corner by Scout.com. Ramsey has close to 20 offers and may be the most athletic of those offered by GT. Coach Andy McCollum is keeping GT in the picture but it will be difficult to get him away from the in-state schools as well as other SEC schools. This seems to hold true in spite of the fact that he indicates that he remains open.

Best Guess: Unlikely But Possible

VERNON HARGREAVES III – (5’11”-181) The Tampa corner is a 5 star and is ranked as the #1 corner by scout.com. Vernon has over 30 offers which is understandable based on his ranking. It is likely that Hargreaves will commit to one of the in-state schools. Florida and South Florida are his current leaders.

Best Guess: Leaning Elsewhere

LEON MCQUAY (6’1”-185) The Seffner, Florida safety is a 4 star and is ranked as the #8 safety by scout.com. Leon made a visit to GT in December but has not shown the interest in GT that he is showing to other schools. A recent visit to Michigan has moved them into his favorites list along with Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, South Florida, and Vanderbilt.

Best Guess: Leaning Elsewhere

ANTHONY COVINGTON (6’-200) The Charlotte corner is a 3 star and is ranked as the #51 corner by scout.com. Covington is originally from Atlanta and visited campus this spring. He has double digit offers with most coming from the ACC. Covington is not likely to leave North Carolina in making his decision. His current leader is Wake Forest with North Carolina another possible option.

Best Guess: Leaning Elsewhere

KORRIN WIGGINS (6’1”-190) The Durham Hillside safety is a 3 star and is ranked as the #39 safety by scout.com. Wiggins has given his verbal commit to North Carolina and is the most recent defensive back to receive an offer from GT. Korrin is a former teammate of current GT quarterback Vad Lee. In spite of his commit to North Carolina, Korrin has continued to take visits. He visited Clemson, Duke, and Wake Forest this spring. Clemson is probably his #2 choice behind North Carolina.

Best Guess: Leaning Elsewhere
