"I made my commitment to Georgia Tech this afternoon when I called Coach Groh and Coach (Paul) Johnson to let them know."
A recent phone conversation with Coach Groh led to Darius Commissiong making his decision. "He went through four pages of defensive plays and schemes. We talked about that for about 20 minutes and then spent the next hour or so talking about academics, life, and being happy with the way my life was heading." Darius knew then that Coach Groh really had his best interests at heart and he knew it was time to do what was best for him.
At one time Darius had planned on making a signing day decision. That changed while he was talking to Coach Groh and Coach Johnson. "I was in the gym and some one took a picture of me and tweeted that I made my commitment to Georgia Tech."
After that the news of Darius' commitment got out, it took off like wild fire and people began calling him and texting him with their congratulations. "I know I wanted to wait until signing day to make my announcement but it is all cool and good as this has worked out for the best."
Darius had planned to call the other schools with the news before going public with his announcement. "It was very hard at first, especially when I called Coach Locksley at Maryland because I was supposed to be there this weekend." The more schools he called, the easier it became for Darius.
Commissiong now knows that he's finished with his recruitment. "I can tell you one thing, if I wasn't, I was after I finished talking to the coaches at other schools." Nearly all of the schools told Darius that Georgia Tech was a great choice.
"Clemson, Maryland, Boston College, and Iowa told me that I made a great decision for myself and that I was in great hands with Coach Johnson. He really loves his players and takes care of them and makes sure they get their degree."
Darius was happy after talking to the other schools. "I knew in my heart I made the absolute best choice I could make for myself."
There were other factors that helped Darius to choose Georgia Tech. He spent many evenings talking with Georgia Tech players Jeremiah Attaochu and Denzel McCoy. "They were up front and honest about what it is like at Georgia Tech and they said it was better than the perception of Tech being in a big city and a engineering school. They talked about how you make the experience there and you can get a great education in just about any field you want."
"It just came down to the the point that Georgia Tech is a great school and a great football program and that is perfect for me."
