New In-State Offer for 2014 S

Mark Richt walked up to 2014 safety Cortez McDowell Saturday in Athens and offered him a scholarship. Find out what the new in-state target thinks about UGA and more here.

"I would have to say that I was a little surprised when Georgia offered me Saturday," said Cortez McDowell. "Coach [Scott] Lakatos has been by the school to check me out and I have received some letters from them, but I did not go to the game expecting an offer."

In fact, it was McDowell that called UGA asking to attend the game.

"Georgia did not really invite me. I am not sure if they were going to or not, but I called them asking if I could get tickets, and they said yes. So I went and I am glad I did."

UGA really has captured McDowell's interest.

"I loved the atmosphere there and the way the fans get into the game. Everyone was into it, making noise, and it was loud.

"I like how the team plays too. Every time I would look up, I would see four or five red jerseys around the ball. They have 11 guys on defense that like to hit and I like to hit, so I liked that.

"I also like that it is close to home. It would be easy for my mom to get back and forth to games and stuff."

Georgia is the fourth school to offer this junior safety out of Locust Grove, Ga. North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Syracuse have also offered him a scholarship.

He does not have a leader at this time and he plans to take this Saturday off before visiting Georgia Tech on November 17 and Florida State on November 24.
