GoJackets.com was at practice Friday afternoon as the team continued preparations for the 2006 season. Ryan Bass there to witness the action and bring us his observations from the practice field.
Here is a portion of the practice report.
1. The big news in the PM practice is that… he’s back! Jamaal Evans was back for his first contact practice and he hasn’t missed a beat from spring. His first carry in team scrimmage was a 15-yard TD. He later picked up another 10 yards and 7 and caught a pass for another nice gain. Just about anytime he touched the ball he did something good with it. There is just no doubt he’s a very good football player and he’ll need to be used this season. He’s got such a quick burst of speed. He hits hole as quick as anyone we’ve seen. What a treat to watch. Luckily he’s back just in time for fans to get a look at him at tomorrow’s scrimmage, which is at 3:30 at BDS.
4. Leshawn Newberry saw time with the first team in the PM practice with Nate McManus & Jacob Lonowski missing time. His strong play that I spoke of on Thursday must have translated into increased confidence from the staff.
13. Byron Ingram was a very pleasant surprise for me today. It was the first time I had really seen him put together several nice slings in a row. In fact, he was pretty sharp from my vantage point. He’s got some tools and I think some may be overlooking him as a future possibility as a starter. He had pretty good arm strength and it showed by leading receivers on out routes to the long side of the field. His throws were on target too this day, so overall and very nice day for him. Where I want to see more is him with guys coming at him. In earlier practices he seemed to have his head on a swivel. I think once things slow down for him in that respect, he’ll be a contender.
