GoJackets.com's Alan NeSmith caught up with Daniel McKayhan earlier this week to talk about him signing to play football for Georgia Tech.
Daniel, congratulations on signing to play football for Georgia Tech. How does it feel for it to be official?
"It feels great! I can play close to home and they’re a great academic school. I'm loving it right now!"
Was playing close to home also a key factor?
"It wasn’t necessarily key, but I didn’t want to play too far from home. It definitely didn’t hurt."
What was the biggest factor in changing your commitment from Memphis to Georgia Tech?
"Academics. You can’t compare a degree from Memphis to Georgia Tech. It speaks for itself."
You’ve made it clear that academics are very important to you. Have you decided on your major?
"Yes, Sir, I have. I’ll be majoring in Biology."
What was your impression of Coach Johnson?
"I like him. I think he’s straightforward; he's an honest coach. He just let me know how everything looked as far what schemes he is running and what positions I would be playing."
What positions did Coach Johnson tell you that you would be playing?
"Wide Receiver, Slot Back, and kickoff and punt returns."
In Tech’s new offense, the wide receivers will be asked to block more than in a traditional offense. How do you feel about blocking?
"I’ll hit. If you need me to block, I’ll block. I’m team oriented."
I had a great time speaking to Daniel. He was very patient in our game of phone tag. I feel we are fortunate to add him to this year’s class as late as we did. I could tell that academics were important to him and that’s a key factor to him being a successful student athlete at Georgia Tech.
