Tech's newest commitment talks about decision

Shaw High School's Phillip Wheeler is Georgia Tech's latest commitment. BorderWars caught up with him this afternoon. Read what he has to say about being a Yellow Jacket.

Phillip Wheeler is a big reason why Shaw High School is 9-1 on the season and on a roll heading into the playoffs against Burke County Friday night. He has 18 tackles for loss on the season and 75 total tackles. He also forced 2 fumbles and recovered 1. He was an All-State selection in 4A last year, and he is having another excellent season this year. BorderWars.com caught up with Georgia Tech's latest commitment this afternoon.

"I actually committed to Tech on Monday," said Wheeler. "There were several schools that were recruiting me hard, but Georgia Tech really made me feel the most wanted. Out of all the schools that are recruiting me, Tech is the best academically, and I'm really interested in getting a good education. Plus I just love Atlanta. I go up to Atlanta on the weekends all the time. With Turner Field being right there and the Georgia Dome, it's just and area that I really like."

Wheeler is hoping for a return trip to the Georgia Dome this season in the state Semi-Finals. "That's my goal right now. I want us to get to the dome and then play for another State Title."

Wheeler played as a sophomore on Shaw's 2000 State Title team, and the rest of the Shaw Raiders have their sites set on a return trip in 2002.

Wheeler is Georgia Tech's 5th public verbal commitment. For a complete list, please click here.
