How's your high school season going?
"Well we've won a couple, one by forfeit because the team was playing with illegal players and we won another by the scoreboard. I'm having a pretty good season. I have about four sacks in eight games, I don't know about the tackles though. We play Chattahoochee this week, a big rivalry game.
Are you pumped?
Have you been playing at tackle on defense I imagine?
"Actually we've moved to a 3-4 and I'm at end, it's awesome."
That must be fun, sounds like Derrick Morgan having that 270 lb end coming at a quarterback.
"Oh yeah, it's great."
I know you've been at the games this year, how about that Virginia Tech game?
"Man it was a great experience! I was excited to see my boy JP (Jason Peters) get that interception and Derrick Morgan get that sack! I got to talk with Derrick after the game and I actually hung out with Jason after the game that night. We really played great. I think the defense definitely took away some doubt people were having about them."
Did you get the chance to talk to any of the recruits?
"Yeah, I actually work out with C.J. Uzomah, so I hung out with him some. I also hung out with Roy Finch awhile. It really went well with him. He's committed to Oklahoma, you know, but you never know. He wants to come back and visit [Tech again]."
You mention C.J. Uzomah. He's a big quarterback prospect with interest from a lot of schools. How interested is he in Tech's offense?
"He's really interested in Tech's offense. He had a good time Saturday."
Have you been calling any recruits?
"Michael Thornton (Stephenson DT) and I talk a good bit, but not so much recruiting all the time, we just talk. I actually just got a new phone so I need to get his number again."
How about Kareem Martin the defensive end from Roanoke Rapids North?
"Oh yeah, we talk like every Tuesday or Thursday. I like him. He likes the city and business program [at Tech]. I think we could definitely get him."
What about all the other Tech commits?
"All of them man. We're all close! I actually just talked to Jake Skole ten minutes ago. We're good friends and we talk a lot."
So are any other schools still recruiting you, trying to talk to you?
"Oh yeah man, a lot. Tennessee came to my game on Friday. Notre Dame is trying to get back in with me because one of my best friends just committed there. West Virginia is trying a little; Florida State is still sending me mail. I get calls from Kentucky now, and oh, LSU, that's it."
What are you telling these schools?
"I'm solid man, solid as a rock! It's not happening man. (Tennessee coaches) [Lane] Kiffin and [Ed] Orgeron were at my game Friday, but I wasn't worried about it. I just tell them, it's like no matter what happens I've got my home."
Denzel will be at the rest of Georgia Tech's home games and is very solid in his commitment to the Yellow Jackets. He made that clear. Not even the "recruiting gurus" Ed Orgeron and Lane Kiffin can turn him. He sees a bright future ahead at Tech under Paul Johnson and is looking forward to getting on the field as soon as possible next year
GoJackets.com checked in with Georgia Tech commit Denzel McCoy to talk with him about his senior season and to address rumors of other schools trying to sway his commitment to the Yellow Jackets.
