Cheeks Hopes Friends Will Join Him at GT

Georgia Tech commit Chaz Cheeks was able to take a friend with him to the Yellow Jackets' practice last Wednesday, April 6th.

East Hall HS OLB Chaz Cheeks was able to see his future team practice last week. He said it was really nice to get down there and take a look. "It was nice to be able to sit in some of the meetings and to walk around the practice field during practice. I really liked the energy during the Oklahoma drills. It was great," he said.

Cheeks also said he was able to check out the new 3-4 defensive scheme that Georgia Tech has installed. "They were able to scrimmage," he said, "so I was able to get a good look at it. The linebackers were roaming around. I liked that. I can see myself doing that."

Chaz's future position coach is the mind behind the new defense for Tech. Coach Al Groh coaches the outside linebackers. Their relationship is good and Chaz can't wait to get there and play for him. "Coach Groh writes me letters, and I'm able to go down and talk with him. It's really nice."

Cheeks wasn't alone on his visit to Georgia Tech last week. He was accompanied by another linebacker recruit from Gainesville HS, A.J. Johnson. "A.J. had come to me while we were playing ball about coming down to Georgia Tech with me the next time I went," Cheeks said. "So I made sure he was with me the next time I went down. He really liked it a lot from what he told me. He likes the 3-4 defense because he plays that in high school. He'd love to play in it in college. He really likes [Tech]."

Continuing to be in Johnson's ear about Georgia Tech is something that Cheeks is planning to do. The only other big recruit that he has contact with is Sterling Bailey, his high school teammate. "I talked to Sterling just recently," Cheeks said. "He gave me his top six and Georgia Tech wasn't one of them. I was getting on to him for that."

Chaz says he is planning on working something out so he can attend Georgia Tech's spring game on April 24th. Maybe he won't be visiting them alone again, either.
